Bio

Véronique Dimier is a political scientist working on history. She has been formerly Deakin and Marie Curie fellow at St Antony's college, Oxford University, Fulbright Fellow at NYU university, Braudel Fellow at the European Institute (Firenze), more recently the holder of the Chaire Gütenberg, University of Strabsourg, SAGE.Her Phd dissertation (Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Grenoble, 1999) deals with the Indirect Rule vs Direct rule controversy among French and British experts in colonial administration from the 1930s on. It analyses the political stakes of this debate, most notably within the Permanent Mandate Commission (Le gouvernement des colonies, regards croisés franco-britannique, Presses Universitaire de Bruxelles, 2004). Since 1999 she has been working on the second career of French colonial officials, most notably their role in the prefectoral corps and in EU development aid programmes in Africa (The invention of a european Development Aid Bureaucracy, Palgrave, 2014), a book which was presented recently at Columbia University, NYU, the EHESS and the European University Institute. She has also been working on imperial citizenship, the debate on securalism within the colonial context and EU external delegations. The last two years she has been working on businesses, decolonization and development/human rights and development/the evaluation of development aid.

This books deals with a science of colonial government, a science meant to compare French and British colonial governement. It analyses its institutionalisation from the 1930s on in France and the UK. It looks at the way this science served political purposes and stakes, most notably within the Permanent Mandate Commission.

- The invention of a european Development Aid Bureaucracy, Palgrave, 2014.

Through in depth analysis of European development institution over the past fifty years, this books outlines the significant influence that former French colonial officials had in designing and implementing development aid programmes in Africa and the way their influence has continued to impact upon EEC development policy in Africa.
